Young Musicians of West Marin is a two-part program for West Marin's youth since 2016, which includes Music-in-the-School for kindergarteners and first graders, and the Point Reyes Children's Choir after school for ages 6-12. These programs bring music to children from all backgrounds throughout rural West Marin, including a significant number of low-income working families, ranch families and Latino families. In West Marin's kindergarten class, over 50% of students are English learners. Our community is fortunate to have Sarah Cane on board to lead these programs. Sarah is a dynamic children's vocal and music instructor who is passionate about providing early music training opportunities for West Marin children.

Performance at La Mesa de las Abuelas
Some of the members of the Point Reyes Children's Choir sang at La Mesa de las Abuelas, "One community sharing food, sharing stories" on April 8. This special event fosters a deeper sense of belonging across cultural and ethnic lines in our diverse West Marin community. Participants brought a traditional dish their grandmother or abuela would have made, and rich bilingual discussions arose at several mixed group tables.

About the Director

Sarah is a dynamic music teacher with 30 years of experience teaching children. She moved to Point Reyes in 2016 and joined Sound Orchard with a passion for creating more music opportunities for West Marin children. With a masters degree in music and extensive vocal and choral training, Sarah was awarded a scholarship to study music education and choral conducting at the Kodály Institute in Hungary. She is past president of Northern California Association of Kodály Educators and a longtime singer and soloist with the San Francisco Bay Area Chamber Choir. She has made a study of folk music and is currently learning old-time fiddle.
Sarah's teaching uses the Kodály method, which is based on the principle that musicianship can be deeply internalized at a young age through vocal and whole-body approaches. Her work with students instills a love of music-making in playful ways and incorporates dance, improvisation, stories and games into a curriculum focused on rigorous musicianship and music literacy.
